Kitchens are one of the most important rooms of our homes. They serve so many purposes, which is exactly why they’re one of my favorite spaces to design. Yes, they are where we cook, but they are also where we gather, entertain, do homework, sip wine, and host all our events.
Because of that, kitchens can also be one of the most expensive renovations in a home-so getting it right matters. Let’s start with one of the biggest decisions, countertops. We all want something that is going to look beautiful but also durable. With more and more products coming on the market, it can be overwhelming to decide what to choose. Granite, quartz, quartzite, marble, terrazzo...the list goes on. If it were a one-size-fits-all solution, my job would be a lot easier but unfortunately the best choice depends on how you actually live in your kitchen. Each material has it owns pros and cons, which is why longevity and maintenance matter just as much as looks. A countertop can be stunning, but if it doesn’t fit your lifestyle , it may quickly become a very expensive regret.
The new year is bringing a new look to our kitchens: bold veining, soft matte finishes, and warm neutral palettes are everywhere. Homes are moving beyond the traditional white quartz and adding more character into their countertops. However, keep in mind just because something may look stunning in a magazine doesn’t mean the durability will work in your lifestyle. Marble and quartzite are absolutely beautiful but will require more maintenance than a quartz or granite.

Now let’s shift gears and discuss cabinets. White shaker cabinets have had a nice long run, but we are officially entering an era of rich, earthy tones. Think warm woods, moody paints, and intentional mixing of stained and painted cabinetry. This layered approach adds depth and personality. But here’s the catch, the wrong shade or finish can age quickly and clash with your lighting so it’s important to sample colors. What color may look good in a friend’s house can look completely different in yours.
Mixing metals continues to be a good concept to go with in kitchens. Pairing two metals together can keep your kitchen from being locked into one particular finish but can also provide more character in your home.
Whether you are remodeling or building a new home, a kitchen should be stunning, functional, and built to last. Investing in thoughtful design planning upfront can save you money, stress, and a whole lot of “I wish we had thought about that” moments down the road.
If you’re ready to create a kitchen that works and wows, I’d love to help! Until next month...Bri
